This is an online MMORPG set in a futuristic alternative history world of super heroes. It is Free To Play (F2P) and it’s good to run on most PC’s 5 years old (like mine).
It has roots in a Tabletop Pen and Paper of the same name, minus the Sufix ‘Online’. So the rules are tight and the lore tighter, but is every complex and detailed from the get go.
You play one of the many [, MANY] heroes in the world. The tutorial starts with an all out attack from Aliens. At first it seemed cliché but the developments after change that some what. Your free account starts with only 2 character slots, but that can be upgraded another 2 for 1260cp (in-game currency paid for from real world cash. 480cp is equal to approx £3.50 [$5]).
Then if you have a Gold [subscribed] account you can create a Free-Form character with what powers and in what combination you want. if you have the Free silver account you are stuck with, I think, 4 main archetypes that are broken down into 10 sub-units in-total. More archetypes can be purchased from the game shop for 420cp each (approx £3.20 [$4.50]). So you can create diverse characters even with a minimal budget.
Now the suit dressing and character design is EXCELLENT! The choices that you get even on the Free account is wide. Other outfits can be unlocked by completing ‘Perks’ later in the game. So if you do not get the suit you want at the start. Check back to any Tailor and see what else you have unlocked from time to time. You also start with TWO layouts of costume. The second must be done at an NPC ‘Tailor’.
Powers! Yes POWERS!!! All players have powers and there are a HUGE number of them. It does seem a little restricted for the Free accounts, but for a start it’s great! The powers do feel strong and very empowering. There are a few REALLY nice additions to make this stick out from any other Targeting/ skill using MMO.
Firstly, There is a Block Skill ([Default]Left Shift, Though I find the ` key works well for it). When you block you reduce the incoming damage and stop effects from some special manoeuvres. This brings in finger twitching, but skill to an already homogenised RPG styles.
Secondly, Special Manoeuvres - These are skills that can be Charged up or Maintained by pressing and holding the relevant skill key. The longer you hold it the stronger the skill reacts. They tend to end up with silver age comic Bam!! Whapp! Foom!!! Above the head of the user (except your own that is) and if you are in the target of one of these an icon in your UI will highlight that the effect is, single target, cone, AoE, the BIG one! These make you feel REALLY powerful and to block enemy versions makes you feel even more Super… hero?!?
Thirdly, Primary Travel and Alternative Travel Skills - Lots of lots to choose and to buy some new ones for cp. You can fly like Superman, run like the Flash, jump like the Hulk. You can even swing, tunnel, teleport, turn invisible, ride vehicles etc… there are around 50 different types of travelling. Flight is the best I have ever seen in an online game and easy to use too.
Now the world does feel very silver age comics, but that is the charm. On that note there are Adventure Packs that are just like an issue of a comic. They can be run from the UNTIL HQ from level 11 and the adventure pack scales to you or your time (if you bring one). They follow on the story and what you do in them are remarkable. Just thick playing a solo game but in an MMO system. They have turret defence, and even time slows as skill effects! What is annoying with the game is some of the master villains are SO hard they do take a LOT of work to kill. In one of the Adventure packs I had to leave the instance as the boss is too hard for me yet… Once I get a few new skills I may try again (Though there is a setting in the options for game difficulty? Never seen before in an MMO). The average Adventure Pack can last between 1 hour and 3 is soloed like I did!
You also get alerts in-game that are group based mini adventures to do that can last from 2 minutes to 10. They tend to give you different rewards and can be VERY confusing, but very fun too.
Now comes to defeat… When you get defeated it does not feel too bad… so that is a PLUS!
There are LOTS of quest… and that is good.
Money is done via Reputation points - so you can purchase healing and energy packs.
Lastly at level 25 (yet to do myself) is you get to set your OWN nemesis to fight against in your character life… Can not wait for this.
So do I like it.. Heck yes!
Blocking Suit design The feel you are subscribed even when playing free Feeling heroic Adventure Packs The game feel To create your own master villain to fight!
Boss Mobs - TOO HARD (Maybe need to put down the in game difficulty) The amount of grinding to get some items. The MANY clones of Iron-man!
Rating so far: 9/10
